Since so many people asked us for instructionnal videos of the Shim Sham filmed from the back, we’ve decided to make them
The Shim Sham danced to the music (T’aint What You Do by Jimmie Lunceford).
The Shim Sham danced to the music (Tuxedo Junction by Erskine Hawkins) with the counts.

This is the video recap of the Swingo class we gave at Lindy Focus VIII.
This is the video recap of the Collegiate Shag Crash Course Natasha and I gave at Lindy Focus VIII.
No, the California Routine is not just 3 Swing Outs and a Cirle
Once again, we’ve decided to go with a real classic piece of the Swing community.
The California Routine was choreographed by Frankie Manning for the Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers. You can see an early version of the routine in the video Spirit Moves
We present here a version that we most often use when the occasion arises. It might vary from other versions that you may come across.
You’ll find individual instructional videos of the moves by clicking on the names during the video
What do you think of this video? Do you dance it differently? Feel free to send us feedback and to comment on the videos.

Turns out that recording in a big dance studio with the built-in mic of the camera is not such a great idea when it comes to recording voices
You’ll have to wait for our own video of the Shim Sham with the counts, but in the meantime, you can check out this great video by Mandi Gould.
You’ll notice that she does some moves slightly differently than we do, that’s what’s so great about it, you can do it you own way
We all know how frustrating it is to be a beginner swing dancer, get to an event and at some point in the evening see all the other dancers gather in the middle of the dance floor and start this line dance that everybody seems to know but you… We’ve all been there!
That’s why we’ve decided to teach the Shim Sham here online!
You can also download the video to your computer (right-click and save the link as…).
This first video is the whole routine danced to the music. We’ll be recording and uploading very soon individual instructional videos for each of the moves of the Shim Sham. So make sure to register to our rss feed if you don’t want to miss them
The song the Shim Sham is usually danced to is “Tain’t What Do You (It’s The Way That You Do It)” by Jimmie Lunceford, we’ve decided to dance it here to Billy Kyle’s version because we really like it
Comments, questions and feedback are more than welcome.
You’ll find the list of the steps and the individual instructional videos in the post The Shim Sham -- Structure and Steps
